Established in 2006 Railway Brake Services Ltd offers a huge wealth of knowledge and experience to the rail industry. Having being involved in the development of braking systems over the last 40 years we are able to provide an unparalleled and vital service to everybody – from the owners of a single preserved locomotive to the country’s largest rail organisations.
The business was initially brought about after Directors, Keith Nicholson and Greg Wilson, noticed a niche opportunity to provide brake overhaul services and technical support to Heritage Railways and Preservation Groups – a service that larger overhauling companies had been unwilling to provide at a price or timescale obtainable for these small heritage railways.
Since that time the knowledge and services we provide have also been recognized by many larger mainstream organisations, and we are now approved suppliers to some of the biggest rail operators in the country.
Our thorough working knowledge of both Westinghouse and Davies & Metcalfe brake components in use since the 1950s, as well as Keith’s close involvement in the development and modification of these components over the decades, makes the service we offer unique.
Abbie has worked for Railway Brake Services for several years as the Administration Manager, dealing with all necessary office admin as well as keeping the company accounts in order and supervising the payment of supplier’s invoices. She has long been surrounded by knowledge of the Rail Industry, being Keith’s daughter – and as can be guessed by the name, she is also married to Phil!
The youngest member of the team, Jacob joined Railway Brake Services in 2012 as a technician – stripping down various valves and components for cleaning and repair. He has been able to learn and benefit from the experience of Keith, and he has now gained much knowledge in his own right, showing great attention to detail in his work.
Phil joined the company in November 2010, having previously worked for TNT. There he dealt with some of their major accounts, which meant he was customer focused, specifically to target the sales and support side of the business. He now builds relationships with our suppliers and customers, agreeing contracts and arranging timescales to ensure our customers receive the best possible service.
Greg is the second Director of Railway Brake Services, and although he is not directly involved in the everyday running of the company, he maintains a keen interest and supporting role in the work we do whilst also acting as Director of the Churnet Valley Railway in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. He is therefore aware of the needs and concerns of a smaller heritage railway company.
Began his career in the rail industry in 1962 at Swindon Works, and moved to London Midland Region Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer’s Department, Nelson Street, Derby, in 1973 where he specifically began dealing with braking systems. He then moved to the Derby Railway Technical Centre in 1989 where he continued his work, eventually becoming the Intercity Brake Engineer.
Following rail privatisation in the mid 1990s, Keith found himself working at Interfleet Technology in Derby, again specialising in brakes systems as a Senior Engineer. Today he still works as an Associate for Interfleet as well as acting as Director for Railway Brake Services.
